Meet A Maverick: Anders Franzon

December 7, 2013

Anders Franzon "Ders"

By Fred Liggett

One of the new faces on the Missouri Mavericks hockey team, defenseman Anders Franzon, is also a fresh face to the game of professional hockey. The first year maverick is also in his first year of playing professional hockey following a successful 4 year career at the University of Vermont.

Ders as his teammates call him has made an immediate impact on the 2013-14 Mavericks as they opened the year with eight straight wins. The 22- year old right hander is a native of Plattsburg, New York. While growing up Anders followed the Toronto Maple Leafs a lot. Maple Leafs standout Mats Sundin was his favorite player.

Still rooting him on from home are his father and a brother. Ders is happy to reveal that he is the youngest in the family. His favorite hockey memory so far was playing in an outdoor game at Bostonís Fenway park. His Vermont team may have lost that day but he gained a wonderful memory that game day.

Anders was 7 years old when he laced on his first pair of Skates which is older than most of his current teammates. If not in pro hockey today Ders would be a putting to work his degree in Civil Engineering.

Anders career goal now that he has made it to Pro hockey is to see how far he can go as a professional. On those long bus trips in the CHL Ders likes to watch movies and keep to himself. If a movie was ever made of his life he wants Brad Pitt to get the lead role. Anders does cook and when he does he makes a famous Sweet Potato.

Donít believe me just ask a number of his teammates. Following his playing days the rookie hopes to be remembered as a solid defenseman who played hard and had fun. While still very new to the area Anders has attended two Kansas City Chiefs games and is hooked. Ders admits he really enjoys the tailgating before the football games. Speaking of games, Mavericks fans will want to head to the Independence Events Center to see Anders and his Maverick teammates play real soon.

Mavericks next home game is on Tuesday, December 10 when they host the Arizona Sun Dogs. The fun starts when the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
