Meet A Maverick: Darren Nowick

February 25, 2017

Rookie Darren Nowick scored the Mavericks lone goal in a 4-1 home loss to the Toledo Walleye. For Mavericks fans, this is no surprise. Nowick  is currently fifth in scoring among ECHL rookies with 41 points. “Nowy,” as his new teammates call him, has been known to be a scorer throughout his hockey career.

Nowick scored a hat trick while in college. He accomplished the mark in a game against Alabama. Nowick reflects on the experience stating, "The puck was bouncing my way and it seemed to go in." Now 25 years old, he roots for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks serving as his favorite pro sports team. Nowick says when he can, he likes to watch them play while he is at the SEC Arena as his place doesn't have cable yet.

The right-handed scoring phenom enjoys the Westport area of Kansas City saying he finds it to be a nice little area. With three teammates all playing at Penn State, Nowy admits it’s "pretty cool to be on the same team as the Penn State Alumni club. Those guys are pretty good guys to play with." At the moment, there are only two PSU alums on the Mavericks roster after goaltender Eamon McAdam was called up to the AHL.

Nowick enjoys traveling in the ECHL but hasn't found a favorite spot on the road just yet.  His family came down a couple of weeks ago to catch a game. His girlfriend also comes down to watch him play. Helping him have a cheering section at home games is a buddy living in Westport who has watched him play a few games.

Nowy called the experience of meeting Willie O’Ree "unbelievable."  Willie O' Ree, the first black NHL player, paid a visit to the team over the Feb. 17 weekend.  O’Ree is now 81 years old and tours the country promoting the sport he and Nowick love so much.

Check out Nowy and the rest of the Mavericks when they continue a four-game home stand against the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday, Feb, 25. The fun begins when the puck drops inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena at 7:05 p.m.
