Much has been made of how quickly the 12 newcomers to the 2013-14 Missouri Mavericks team jelled with the veterans to produce another winning season. 2 new Mavericks joined the team about halfway through the season, Defenseman Mattieu Gagnon and Jeff Buvinow.
The 21-year old Gagnon started his season with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. After appearing in 22 games with the Jackals "Gags" as he is called by his teammates is very happy to be with the Mavericks. The left handed defenseman is a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks because his favorite NHL Players play for Chicago.
The Gatineau Quebec native has his dad and older sister still rooting him on from home. Gagnon's favorite hockey memory so far is playing in the Presidents Cup while playing in his native Canada. No surprise to hear Mattieu first put on a pair of skates at the age of 3.
If not in pro hockey today "Gags" would either be in school or working on his improving his golf game. Sleeping or watching a movie on his Ipad is what he likes to do to pass the time on those long CHL road trips. Mattieu's favorite movie is the Gladiator.
When he does cook Gagnon likes anything with Chicken. Following his playing days Mattieu hopes to be remembered as a team player, a winner. While very new to the Kansas City metro area Gagnon has found several good restaurants and hopes to find some more.
Mattieu is quick to add he also likes the warmer weather here than he finds in his hometown in Quebec. Many Mavericks fans may find this hard to believe but Mattieu admits it's "Way hotter here than in Quebec". Mavericks fans of all ages will enjoy watching this new young talent before the season ends.
The Mavericks finish the home portion of the regular season this weekend when they host the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday, March 29 at 7:05pm.
The Mavericks will return to home ice to begin playoff action on Friday, April 4. The post-season fun begins when the puck drops inside the Independence Events Center at 7:05pm.
