A breakaway goal on New Year’s eve by right winger Mike Ramsay was a true jaw dropper for those watching the Missouri Mavericks beat the Tulsa Oilers. Ramsay’s goal helped the Mavs claim a 4-2 win to finish up the 2013 portion of there season schedule.
Ramsay went one on one against the Oilers goaltender then with tremendous force fired a shot right past him following a nifty pass from Dave Pszenyczny. Ramsay feels "It was a nice win at home." This highlight goal is just one of the reasons why Mavericks fans are glad to have this first year right winger part of the team.
Ramsay, now 29 years old, provides a veteran presence for the coaching staff. Before coming to Missouri for the 2013-14 season Ramsay has played 8 pro seasons and 4 of them coming in the Central Hockey League.
"Rammer" as his teammates call him has played professionally in Norway and England in addition to his time with 3 different leagues here in the United States. Ramsay was born in Newmarket, Ontario and still makes his home there with his wife. Mike’s favorite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. Ramsay says this is due to them being close to his hometown.
Ramsay’s favorite hockey memory so far occurred in his one season playing in Finland when his team made it all the way to the championship series.
No Mike’s team did not win the championship that year but he calls the series a "neat experience." Ramsay first put on a pair of skates at the age of 6 and played organized hockey at the age of 8. Mike admits that’s pretty late for someone growing up in Canada but it hasn’t stopped him in having a professional career.
For the last 7 off seasons Ramsay has been working at a college in facility maintenance. If not in pro hockey today Mike feels thats what he would be doing full time. Mike feels he will very likely be doing that as a career when his hockey career is over. His career goal is to win a hockey championship as that’s something he has yet to attain.
The right handed forward watches movies to pass the time on those long CHL road trips. If a movie was ever made of his life Mike would like actor Danny DeVito to play him.
Like many Mavericks fans Ramsay is a BBQ guy and likes to grill steak and chicken. Following his playing days Ramsay hopes he will be known as a good teammate and a guy who has fun.
Mike’s favorite area of Kansas City is the Country Club Plaza.
With goals like the one Ramsay had back on new year’s eve there is no doubt he plays the game with a lot of energy. Ramsay and his Maverick teammates return to home ice on Saturday, Feb. 08 when the red hot Allen Americans come to town. The fun starts when the puck drops at 7:05 inside the Independence Events Center.
