Meet A Maverick: Hunter Smith #34

When Mavericks hockey fans watch this year's team, one player on the ice will stand above all the rest. That's because Mavericks newcomer Hunter Smith is 6 feet 7 inches tall to go along with weighing 231 pounds. The first-year Maverick spent the last two seasons playing in the AHL for the Stockton Heat. The 3rd year pro wishes to return to that level later this season.

Smitty, as he is called by his new teammates, hails from Windsor, Ontario. His parents, grandparents and a girlfriend reside there still, and all root him on from home. Smith says his favorite pro sports team is the Detroit Tigers because they are the nearest MLB team to his home in Ontario.

Meet A Maverick: Eric Freschi #11

The Kansas City Mavericks have benefited this season by the work of the team's rookies, who are off to a hot start to their careers. Last week we told you about Alex Brooks. This week we spotlight Eric Freschi, who is enjoying his 1st season as a pro hockey player.

Freschi scored his first goal as a Maverick against Wichita on Saturday Nov. 11. The team lost the game 6-2, but Freschi's first professional goal was the talk after the game.

Meet A Maverick: Alex Brooks #72

A national champion in college, and now here in Missouri pursuing a professional championship, is Mavericks newcomer Alex Brooks. A right-handed defenseman, Brooks won a NCAA D-III national championship while a senior at Wisconsin Stevens-Point in 2016.

Brooksy, as his new teammates call him, is now in his 2nd year of pro hockey, having played last season with Fayetteville of the Southern Pro Hockey League. Count Mavericks Head Coach John Scott-Dickson as among those glad Brooks is here.

Meet A Maverick: Mike McMurtry #7

A name that Mavericks fans will want to watch for is Forward Mike McMurtry. The newcomer already has more AHL experience than performing on the ECHL level. Mike began his pro career last season with the Texas Stars.

Murch, as his new teammates call him, is 25 years old and ready to return to the AHL level as he continues his career in the Calgary Flames system. Mike's favorite Sports team is the NFL's Detroit Lions. As a youth, attending Lions games was a family tradition. Detroit, Michigan is not far from his hometown in Ontario, Canada.

Meet a Maverick: Tyler Parsons #1

Ask any sports fan about players who wear jersey #1, and the response will be about an exciting player who scores a lot. This season, the Kansas City Mavericks are hoping the player wearing #1 will provide excitement to a game by preventing anyone from scoring.

A first year pro, goaltender Tyler Parsons is now in Kansas City to continue the franchise history with excellent goaltending. Parsons started the 2017-18 season in pre-season camp with both Calgary and Stockton before being sent to Kansas City. Parse, as his new teammates call him, is excited about being here and performing in front of sell-out crowds at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

New Team Name, New Team Affiliations & A New Division - What Mavericks Fans Need to Know

Mavericks hockey fans are used to seeing changes when a new season begins, and the 2017-18 campaign will be no different.

Last year the Mavericks moved to the ECHL's Mountain Division and introduced a new head coach in John Scott-Dickson. This year the Mavericks began making changes on June 1, when they changed the team name from Missouri to Kansas City. Later in the off-season, the team announced new AHL & NHL affiliations. The Mavericks are now affiliated with the Stockton Heat of the AHL and Calgary Flames of the NHL.

More changes came when the ECHL league meetings convened, and one of the results was changes to the leagues divisions. The KC Mavericks will now compete in the Central Division against teams like Cincinnati, Indy and Quad City. The Mavericks nearest rivals, Wichita and Tulsa, were moved out of the Central division during the off-season.

Mavericks Sign Aneloski For 2017-18

Defenseman Bryce Aneloski is set to begin his second stint in Kansas City after signing with the team on Thursday, announced by Mavericks general manager Brent Thiessen.

Mavericks Hockey Has A New Name & New Affiliations For 2017-18 Season

June has been a busy month for the Mavericks hockey franchise and it's fans. The first week saw the team become the Kansas City Mavericks. The next week, the team announced new NHL and AHL affiliations for the upcoming season.

Mavs Players See Hockey History in Person

The Missouri Mavericks continue to make history for the franchise each time they take the ice for an ECHL game. While the current edition of the Mavericks hockey team tries to put another winning note down in team history, the players and coaches saw a lot of hockey history last weekend.
