O’Hara wins district with 55-6 victory
October 27, 2011 By Brother Richard With Ronnie Sailer and Gabe Spencer each scoring two touchdowns, the Archbishop O’Hara High School football Celtics won the Class 3 District 13 on October 27 defeating the Central Blue Eagles by a score of 55-6. It was the most points scored by the Celtics this season, the previous high being 47 against the Saint Pius Warriors O’Hara’s other four touchdowns were scored by Jake Fortin, Tanner Hull, Brandon Dennis, and D.J. Griffin, while Julian Gidley connected on seven extra points for eight attempts. A long kickoff return by the Blue Eagles opened the game but the two-point conversion was stopped to put the Celtics behind 6-0. Things didn’t improve on the Celtics’ reception of the ensuing kick when Brandon Dennis fumbled the ball to give possession back to the Blue Eagles on the 28 yard line. However Central was unable to attain a first down and gave up the ball on downs when a halfback pass play fell incomplete. Quarterback Jake Fortin on O’Hara’s first two offensive plays completed passes to Brandon Dennis for 39 yards and to D.J. Griffin for 33 yards. In two plays, the Celtics picked up the necessary five yards for a touchdown with Fortin plunging for the final yard. After seven offensive plays, Central punted to O’Hara. Brandon Dennis caught a pass for 49 yards to advance to the 11 yard line where Ronnie Sailer carried it in for a TD. Tanner Hull recovered an onside kick for the Celtics who took over on the 46 yard line. Two plays later Jake Fortin passed to Brandon Dennis for a 17 yard gain and followed with a pass to Ronnie Sailer for 30 yards and O’Hara’s third touchdown of the day. After three downs, the Blue Eagles punted. O’Hara had the ball for the next seven plays but at the 45 yard line also elected to punt. Racing downfield, Peyton Franklin recovered a fumble by the punt receiver giving the Celtics an excellent opportunity on the 20 yard line. From this point, Gabe Spencer ran the ball in to paydirt. Again Central went three and out and punted the ball. It only took four plays for O’Hara to add another TD. The actual scoring came from a 37 yard pass to Brandon Dennis, but prior to that, Brett Coatney had run for a 24 yard gain and the O’Hara team gained 15 yards on a pass interference call. Again Central was unable to get a first down and punted. Five plays contributed to this O’Hara score. A pass to D.J. Griffin for 17 yards, a pass to Brandon Dennis for 13 yards, a 22 yard run by Gabe Spencer, and a 26 yard run by Tanner Hull all prededed Tanner Hull’s line plunge for the six points. With the score of the game at 41-6 and time running out for the first half, Brett Coatney intercepted and returned the ball to the 28 yard line. One play later, Jake Fortin passed to D.J. Griffin for a 22 yard touchdown. Since the score was 48-6 to start the third quarter, the game was played the remainder of the day with a running clock. Michael Briggs took over as quarterback and a number of back-up players saw action. Midway through the third quarter, O’Hara mounted the game’s last scoring drive. Keeping the ball on the ground, the Celtics chipped away toward the goal with Kyle Lay’s 19 yard run the longest in this stretch. Gabe Spencer scored the touchdown on a 6 yard run on the last play of the third quarter. Although the Celtics got the ball as close as the 8 yard line in the fourth quarter, an interception in the end zone prevented yet another score. The Blue Eagles strove to get something going the rest of the game but ended up on the 31 yard line when time expired.
