The race begins with the finish line in the distance. Obstacles are found along the trail, but the winner is the one who overcomes the obstacles and never loses focus on the finish line.

The race for Kris Solsberg began in 1982 while coaching jumpers at Lee’s Summit High School. He was hired by Russ Childress, long time cross country coach at the school. Kris was coaching with his former coach Bob Craddock. Craddock has recently moved from Raytown South High School. While still coaching jumpers, Solsberg was asked to start the cross country program at newly opened Campbell Middle School. “I think Russ was thinking that with a new high school in the works, he needed to be developing more coaches.”

Coach Solsberg coached the Campbell Mustangs for two seasons, and then returned to Lee’s Summit High School for a season as the assistance Cross Country Coach.

In 1995, he began the Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field programs at Lee’s Summit North while also teaching industrial technology. His fifth season at North, he took the cross country team to state and was able to finish 13th. Sosberg earned two state titles in Men’s Track and Field along the way(2005 and 2007) A state title for Cross Country eluded his team. He and his teams continued work progressing to a 2nd place finish at State in the 2009 season.

This season, for the first time in the school’s brief 16 year history, he and his men brought home a state title for Lee’s Summit North in Men’s Class 4 Cross Country.

When asked what made the difference with this group of young men, he commented, “This is a special group. They are very talented and perform at a high level. These guys show maturity and can turn it on when they really have to.”

His example has not gone unnoticed. According to the parent of one of his runners, Taylor Park and Kolton Sheldon, LSNHS seniors, plan to continue training this week while in Hawaii with the school music program.
