HAPPY BIRTHDAY USA JULY 4, 2010
June 24, 2010 By Maisie Rodenbaugh Nations come to into being in many different ways. The birth of our nation, the United States of America was reached by the same trials and occurrences such as military rebellion, civil strife, acts of heroism, acts of treachery and a thousand greater and lesser clashes between defenders of the old order and supporters of the new. That birth was unique, not only because of the growth of democracy but also because of so many of the threads in our natural history run back through time to come together in one place, in one time and in one document, the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson did the paper work and it was presented to a committee of five. The committee was John Adams, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin and Robert Livingston. Some changes was made in the document by Franklin and Adams and then presented to the Congress and was finally adopted. by the committee and by the Congress. On July 1, 1776 Congress reconvened. The following day, it was adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies, New York not voting. The process of some revisions continued all through July 3and into the late morning of July 4. Then at last the church bells rang out over Philadelphia, the Declaration was officially adopted. The Don Avise Memorial VFW Post and Auxiliary invite you to the fireworks at Lake Lotawana, Gate 1 on July 4 and we have free parking. Bring your lawn chairs and have a front row seat on our lawn.
