When the four of us – myself, Paula McKinley, Kit Carson and Sue Higgins-Sprowell – and started talking about doing the fundraiser for David King on Feb. 18, we never dreamed that it would unfold and happen the way it did. Our goal was to pay the King family’s rent for one year; never would we have dreamed that we would be able to it pay longer than that.
I am so happy to say that we have now raised over $18,000. There are so many people we need to say thank you to, and the first is the community, because without all of you showing up in the droves that you did, we would not have seen this turnout.
In a letter like this you are always so afraid you are going to miss thanking someone, and we had so many people who helped it is impossible to list everyone. But there are a few people that have to be named.
First of all, VFW Post 5789, Lee’s Summit, who donated the hall and helped us do this. Post 5789 Ladies Auxiliary who showed up at 6am and cooked the breakfast and donated all the proceeds.
All of the people that baked the hundreds of baked goods for the bake sale.
Two Women in a Kitchen who cooked the dinner, Cosentinos Price chopper, Patty Cordes and Matt Rex who donated food.
Hy-Vee East in Lee’s Summit who put over 1100 flyers in there grocery sacks so that we could let the community know about this event.
The Lees Summit Tribune, who helped us advertise; the Kansas City Star; and Channel 4, who stayed with us throughout the morning interviewing and giving us coverage. Thank you, Carey Wickersham and Kyle.
I also want to thank Bank of Lee’s Summit, County Beverage Central States; Bob McCann, who ran to the grocery store several times as we kept running out of food. Terry King, who filled in wherever we needed him.
The bands, Country Rick and the Barnyard Playboys and Saddle Broke, who donated their talents and time to entertain.
Thank you to all of the businesses and individuals who donated so many items for the silent Auction, there are so many I cannot name them all.
Last but not least, all of the people who volunteered their time, some of them all day, it was the volunteers who helped us pull this off a BIG HUGE THANK YOU.
It was a great pleasure working with Paula, Sue and Kit, and I can’t wait to work with you again. You ladies are awesome! If we have forgotten anyone, we are sorry, but know that we so much appreciated all that everyone did, and David and his family cannot express how much it meant, you will be forever in all of our hearts.
