Each year Tracy Cox conducts a patriotic music program - these 2nd graders performed just a portion of that program. Dr. Tulipana, Principal at Renner made this possible by allowing a school bus to transport the children. 4 classroom flags and two plaques were presented to Dr. Tulipana and Tracy Cox.

On Saturday April 2, 2011 the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary National President made her official visit to Missouri. National President, Cortina Barnes, is from Washington DC and was installed at the National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana in August 2010.
Each year the National President visits all fifty states and several Auxiliaries overseas. This year the visit to Missouri took place in Lee’s Summit where Chairman Susan Eveland and Co-chairman Nicole Kelly reside. The day started with a meeting at the Lee’s Summit Housing Authority where the President was welcomed by an aisle of American flags held by members of the Ladies Auxiliary from all over Missouri. After a productive meeting lunch was served by Auxiliary 5789, Lee’s Summit. The afternoon was spent at the Truman Library. A banquet to honor President Barnes was held at VFW Post 5789 on Saturday evening. A wonderful meal was prepared by Two Women in a Kitchen Catering, which is owned by Auxiliary 5789 member Nicole Kelly. The highlight of the evening was a performance by the 2nd grade music class from Renner Elementary in the Park Hill School District. Their music teacher, Tracy Cox, was honored as the Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year by the VFW Department of Missouri at a banquet held in Jefferson City in February. Renner Elementary Principal, Dr. Tulipana was instrumental in getting the students to the event by providing a bus at her expense. The students sang a few songs from the Patriotic program that Mrs. Cox teaches each year. President Barnes stated she was honored to be entertained by America’s future.
The visit came to a close with hostess Susan Eveland presenting President Barnes with a Key to the City of Lee’s Summit. Mayor Rhoades was unable to attend the event, but a letter was read congratulating President Barnes on her many accomplishments with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
The Department of Missouri, the Fabulous 5th District and the Ladies of Auxiliary 5789 had a wonderful weekend with National President Barnes and we look forward to seeing her again at the National Convention in San Antonio, Texas in August.
