VFW Post 5789 News 07-18-09

By Ken Davis

The quarterly meeting of VFW District 5 will take place on August 2nd at the home of VFW Post 1000 in Independence.  The VFW will conduct their annual school of instruction for new post officers beginning at 10:00 AM.  The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary will enjoy a potluck luncheon at 1:00 PM followed by the meetings of both organizations at 2:00 PM.  All VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members are cordially invited to attend this luncheon and the meetings that follow.

Post 5789 would like to thank the members of the Lee’s Summit community for supporting our fireworks tent during the 4th of July holiday period.  This project raises much-needed funds for the many programs that we conduct during the year.  We can always count on the generous support of the Lee’s Summit citizens.

Each year the VFW sponsors two scholarship programs for high school and middle school students.   These programs are an opportunity for 6th – 12th grade students to win valuable cash prizes.  The Voice of Democracy audio essay program is for grades 9 – 12.  It consists of writing and recording a 3 -5 minute essay on a topic chosen annually by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.  The theme for the 2009-2010 program is “Does America Still Have Heroes?”  The Patriot’s Pen program is for students in 6 – 8 grades.  Entries consist of a 300 – 400 word essay on this year’s theme of “When Is the Right Time to Honor Our Military Heroes?”  The local deadline for both of these programs is November 1, 2009.  Home schooled students are also encouraged to enter.  There is competition and prizes for both of these contests at the local, district, state and national levels of the VFW.  For more information about either of these scholarship opportunities, please call (816) 525-5789 and leave your name and phone number.
