VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Update
February 11, 2010 Voice of Democracy Scholarship Update By Nicole Kelly, 5th District President
Pictured from left to right; 5th District President Nicole Kelly, District Voice of Democracy winner Emily Stebbins and District Commander Chris Bell posed for pictures before learning that Emily would be the evening’s big winner. Congratulations Emily and the 5th District. In my last article I told you that I along with the 5th District Commander Chris Bell would have the distinct pleasure of escorting the 5th district winner of the Voice of Democracy contest, Emily Stebbins to the Department Voice of Democracy banquet in Jefferson City to compete with 13 other district winners. The day began with the students being presented jackets, and then taken on tours of the Winston Churchill museum and the panels of the Berlin Wall at Westminster College in Fulton, which they all seemed to enjoy immensely. When it came time for the banquet Chris and I presented Emily with a corsage and then visited with her family which included her parents, brothers and her grandmother. The banquet room was filled with anticipation with everyone wondering who the winner was going to be. One by one the names were called and finally there were only two left. I am proud to say that the 5th District came home with the Department of Missouri Voice of Democracy winner, Emily Stebbins from Raytown High School. Emily was sponsored by Post 8100 in Grandview. Emily will now travel to Washington D.C. in the spring to compete for the National title. She will have a chance to win $30,000 and will leave there with no less than $1000. In past years the winner has also had the opportunity to meet the President of the United States. Let’s all wish Emily good luck and cheer her on. We are very proud of you Emily. On another note, I was presented with my 90% medal, and got to go participate in the “Night on the Town” which means the 5th District auxiliary reached 90% in membership. I would again like to thank all of the auxiliaries in the 5th district for working so hard because if it was not for you I would not have had the wonderful weekend that I did. I will be presenting all of the awards we received at the district meeting on February 21st.
