David Dee Helmuth, Lee's Summit, was born Feb. 28, 1936, in Garden City, Mo., and passed away Jan. 7, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital, Lee's Summit, after an extended illness.

Memorial service is to be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Grace United Methodist Church, 2400 SE 50 Highway, Lee's Summit. Visitation is at 9:30 a.m. before the memorial service.

David was the youngest son of Daniel Roy “Pete” and Berneice (Ebersol) Helmuth. He graduated high school in Garden City and then earned his bachelor's in biology and physical education and his master's in education from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

He was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon social fraternity and Phi Delta Kappa honors fraternity. During his years at CMSU he met Diane Denney and they were married March 8, 1958, in Odessa, Mo. David Helmuth's 30-year career of excellence in education started in 1958 in Lexington, Mo. He taught seventh grade science and driver's education and coached football, basketball, track and golf.

After the Helmuth's moved to Lee's Summit in 1959 David continued teaching similar grades and classes and added adult civil defense instruction and director of adult education to his career roles.

In Greenwood, he taught sixth grade. In Lee’s Summit, he served as Elementary Principal at Hazel Grove (1967-73); Mason (1973-80); and Prairie View (1980-88). David was a lifelong Methodist. He joined the Lee's Summit United Methodist Church in 1959 where he faithfully served through the years on finance committees, the Council on Ministries, as church school teacher, church school superintendent, youth counselor and as education work Area Chairman.

His community involvement included Optimist Club, serving as Boys Work Chairman from 1969-71 and First Vice President, 1971-72. He served on the Richards-Gebaur Base Community Council from 1969-71 and on the Chamber of Commerce from 1981-88. David was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association, Jackson County Elementary Principals Association, Missouri State Principals Association, National Association of Elementary School Principals, Lee's Summit Education Association, was Administrator of the Year 1983-1984; MCA Basketball Board; International Reading Association; Literacy Award 1987; and was a PTA Member receiving Lifetime Award and member of Retired Teachers Association 1988-1998.

After retirement David became a Real Estate Broker/Salesperson and President of 4-D Investment, Inc.

David is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Diane of the home, Lee's Summit; their two daughters Shari (Rick) Krepps, Lee's Summit; Mindy (Jim) Burks of Ventura, Calif., and four granddaughters; Christine Woiwood, Samantha Woiwood, Regan Burks and Shannon Burks. His brother, Richard (Isabel) Helmuth, Leawood, Kan. Sister in law, Dixie (Bill) Eason, Lee's Summit; brother in law, Randy (Carol) Denney, Oak Grove, Mo.; several nieces, nephews, family members and a multitude of friends who all loved and respected David and will always remember him with great love and appreciation for the lifelong contributions he made to education, community and church.

The family suggests memorial gifts be given to Lee's Summit Educational Foundation, 301 NE Tudor Rd., Lee's Summit,
