Dr. Robert Evan “Bob” Smith

Dr. Robert Evan “Bob” Smith, age 68 of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away May 5th, 2012 surrounded by his family, at home, from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.  Visitation will be held Wednesday May 9th from 7-9 p.m. at Langsford Funeral Home and Thursday morning May 10th from 9-11am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 850 SE Church St.  Lee’s Summit, MO 64063. Funeral service will be May 10th at 11 a.m. at the Church following the visitation.  Burial in Leavenworth National Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice.

Dr. Smith was born in Los Angeles, CA, and spent his childhood in Sweet Home Oregon.  He received both his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate degrees from Brigham Young University.  He joined the US Army in 1968 and served his country both on active and reserve duty until his retirement as a Master Sergeant in 2001.  During his service he received numerous awards and citations including the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a devoted Chemistry professor for 40 years.  For the last 21 years he taught at Longview Community College impacting hundreds of students in healthcare related fields.  In March of the year, he received the Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

He was a member of the Lee’s Summit Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).  Bob and his wife Beth, “The Bread Lady” were mainstays at the Lee’s Summit Farmers Market for the last 20 years selling homemade breads, muffins, cookies and fresh herbs.  He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various church positions.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Allen Auer Smith and Melba Jane McCall Smith.  He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Margaret Elizabeth “Beth” Samec  Smith and his two daughters; Brenda Smith, Los Angeles, CA and Katie Smith, Falls Church VA, sister Donna Smith French, brother and sister-in-law Allen and Mariz Smith, and brother and sister-in-law Pete and Lois Smith.
