Elizabeth Ann (Maddison) Dietrich

March 6, 2013

Elizabeth Ann (Maddison) Dietrich, 86, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2013. Betty, as she was known to her friends and family, was born in Brunswick, GA on July 5, 1926. She graduated in 1945 from Glynn Academy High School, Brunswick, GA. She is the daughter of Richardson Maddison and Agnes Howey Maddison, both deceased, who emigrated from England in 1919. She was one of nine children. Pansy Cross, Edith Maddison, Beatrice Mills, Jimmy Maddison, and Minnie Clemons are deceased. Currently living in Brunswick, GA are sisters, Agnes Floyd, and Estelle Miller; and brother, Anthony Maddison.

During high school she worked for a short time for the Ration Board established during World War II and was then transferred to civil service working at the Naval Air Station on St. Simons Island. There she met and married Walter Coffman Dietrich (deceased 1995) on November 10, 1945 and together they raised four children.  Betty never met a stranger, and has many friends through her travels as a military wife, her work, and numerous volunteer activities.  She was a passionate bridge player, sometimes playing six times a week with her many bridge groups around Lee’s Summit.  Betty loved bowling, gardening, and swimming, and read more books than she could keep track of, especially mystery novels.

After raising her children, Betty decided to use her talents in working outside the home.  She was a clerk and lecturer for Weight Watchers for some time, and in March 1977 she went to work as a clerk, GS-3, at the Publications Distribution center at Richards Gebaur AFB. She later transferred to the Department of Agriculture in Kansas City and in September 1978 moved to the Marine Corps Finance Center as an accountant for Marine separation pay. She retired in August of 1986.

Throughout her life, Betty dedicated much of her time to volunteer work and service to community and church organizations.  She was a Girl Scout leader, held various PTA positions, and was involved in the League of Women Voters. As a member of the Lee Summit Methodist church for many years, she participated in various Women’s Circles and was past Vice President of United Methodist Women for the local district. She was a long time member and past Secretary for the GreenLea Federated Club, and a member of the Missouri Conservation Extension from 1970 to 1977.   She was a tireless volunteer at the Lee’s Summit Hospital and Medical Center until she relocated to Sacramento to be closer to her family.

Her surviving children are Walter Daniel Dietrich (Barbara) of Fayetteville, NC; Andrew Richard Dietrich (Pat) of Pearland, TX; Patricia Ann Rouen (Larry) of Sacramento, CA and Beverly Lynn Carey (John) of Mercer Island, WA.  She cherished her eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church in Lee’s Summit on Monday 3/11 at 9:30am, followed by a memorial service at 10:30. Following the service the interment will be at the Floral Hills East Memorial Cemetery on Highway 350 in Lee’s Summit.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in her name to the March of Dimes or to Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church – Thanksgiving Dinner.

Arrangements entrusted to Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St., Blue Springs, Mo, 816-229-3276.  Memories and condolences for the family may be left at www.meyersfuneralchapel.com.
