Francis “Junior” Browning
October 6, 2012
Francis “Junior” Browning passed away Sept. 30 after a brief illness.
Junior was a life-long resident of Lee’s Summit and a Mason. The summer after graduating from Lee’s Summit High School in 1948, Junior met Norma, the love of his life. They married in December, 1950 and were together for the next 62 years. In fact, when Junior joined the service in September of 1951, Norma even followed him to California while he was still in basic training. Later Junior was stationed in Japan and served as the company clerk in his army unit. He often told stories about running into his high school friends from Lee’s Summit on their way to the Korean conflict.
His father ran the Summit Oil Company, a local service station. As early as high school, Junior helped at the station and in fact took over operation of the business after his father retired. After selling the service station in the early sixties, Junior sold real estate, life insurance and he also owned and maintained several rental properties.
When he wasn’t working, Junior enjoyed bird hunting and fishing. You could often find him either in western Kansas pheasant hunting or fishing in Canada. He told stories of jumping in the car with some of his friends and driving 23 hours to fish for a day or two then turn around and drive home in time for work. Oh how he loved to fish.
Fishing wasn’t his only pass time though. He and Norma were members of the Lee’s Summit Saddle Club for several years. Their love of horses led them to begin racing thoroughbreds. Junior enjoyed taking Norma and his sisters with him to the races all across the eastern half of the country. Whether driving or flying they enjoyed watching Junior’s horses run. One sister even had a pair of golden shoes that was said to bring them good luck.
Junior was in the cattle business also. He loved his cows and continued raising them until the time of his death. Junior Browning was a pillar of the community. He was one of those men whom everyone in town knew and respected. He was a leader without being in the spotlight. He will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
He leaves behind Norma Browning, his beloved wife of 62 years, his three sisters; Gerry Benoit, Sharon Schwindler and Donna Banes, a niece and several nephews.
Funeral services were Oct. 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Langsford Funeral Home. Visitation was Oct. 3 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial in the Lee’s Summit Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
(Arrangements: Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW Third St., Lee’s Summit, MO., 64063, 816-524-3700.)
