Geraldine K. McKee, 95, Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away Friday, May 18, 2012, at John Knox Village Care Center. Memorial services will be on Saturday, June 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church located at 2nd & Douglas St in Lee’s Summit with inurnment in Lee’s Summit Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church at 10:00 a.m. preceding the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Village Hospice, the Red Cross, where she had volunteered for over 50 years, or to the church.
Gerry was born April 26, 1917, in Cincinnati OH and had been a Lee’s Summit resident for over 65 years. Upon her graduation from the University of Missouri in 1938, Gerry began teaching science at the Barstow School in Kansas City MO, utilizing her Biology major and Chemistry minor. She later became a substitute science teacher at the Lee’s Summit High School. In 1941, Gerry married William McKee, and they were married for 60 years until his death in 2001. Later they became the proud parents of their two sons, Mark McKee and the late John McKee.
Over the years, Gerry was very active in the community holding memberships in the PTA, Cub Scouts, Pi Beta Phi national sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Additionally, Gerry served on boards for the United Methodist Church where she was Chairman of its archive committee, John Knox Village, American Red Cross (Kansas City Chapter), Chair of the R-7 School District Youth Services, and was a charter member of the Lee’s Summit Community Hospital Auxiliary. She organized the Lee’s Summit Republican Club in 1952, and was most admirably the gracious First Lady of Lee’s Summit from 1972 to 1978 while her husband, William McKee, served as Mayor.
Her long life was well lived as a loving wife, a nurturing mother and a loyal friend. Gerry is survived by her son Mark, Sharon McKee, three grandchildren, Monte McKee, Rachel McConville and husband Jeremy, and Robert McKee, as well as Ann and Jim Messmer.
