Kenneth Ray Holmes, 65, passed away Sept 2nd,
2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital at the Plaza following a tragic bicycling
accident.
Ken was born on June 21st, 1945, Kansas City, MOto Oscar and Arline Holmes. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher and
friend, Ken touched the lives of many. Ken was respected and admired
high-school teacher at Lee’s
SummitHigh SchoolRetiring after 27 years of service.
While teaching, Ken held many department
offices and was awarded the Missouri State Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year.
Ken spend the last several years as a design engineer or R & D Leverage in Lee’s Summit, he truly
loved his work as a teacher and architect. His passions also included cycling,
competitive shooting, and wood working.
Throughout his life he enjoyed golfing,
horseshoes, and playing the trumpet and dulcimer. Most of all, Ken cherished
time spend with family, attending grandchildren’s school and sporting events
and having long evenings spend laughing and relaxing together in the beautiful
home he designed and built for his family. Ken was a veteran, having served in
the Army in the Special Security Unit and as a paratrooper. He will be most
remembered for his compassionate, optimistic and generous character. He served
as a role model for many.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of
42 years, Cheri, of the home, Ken will be greatly missed by his daughter and
son-in-law, Kristen and Tom Merrell and grandchildren, Kennedy, Sydney, and
Kellen Merrell of Lee’s Summit; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and
Robert Hanes, and grandchildren, Darby and Jameson Hanes of Austin, TX; and
also by his close and loving friends and their families. He is survived by his
two brothers, Don Holmes (Edna) of Concord, CA and Roger Holmes (Ellen) of
Louisville, CO and two sisters, Jan Mansfield of Lee’s Summit and Linda Holmes
of MN. Funeral services will be at 11:00am Saturday, Sept 11, with visitation
beginning at 10:00am at GraceUnitedMethodistChurch, 2400 SE 50 Hwy, Lee’s Summit, MO64063 with Reverend
Hubert Neth and Reverend Lee Soxman officiating.
