Margaret Helen Griffith Browning

Margaret Helen Griffith Browning, 85, Lee’s Summit, died peacefully at her home on Dec. 8, 2009 after more than 20 years battling Alzheimer’s disease.

Margaret was born March 17, 1924, in Lee’s Summit. She graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1941, where she was active in music and sports and gave up her further musical education at Missouri Valley College to marry Eugene Browning the next year.

She was an accomplished musician, having traveled and performed during the 1960s and 1970s with her husband and eight children as “The Browning Family Show.” Audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada enjoyed the wholesome family musical show, due in great part to the nurturing efforts of this lovely lady. She also helped manage her husband’s family-owned clothing store in downtown Lee’s Summit, Browning Mercantile, for many years. She continued to sing and play the piano in small combo groups at senior center dances in her later years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Addie Belle Griffith, and her brother, Forrest Griffith.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Eugene Browning and their eight children: Carol Ann Winburn, Butler; Nancy E. Blackwell, Lee’s Summit; Mary Margaret Stockton, Riverton, Wyo.; Linda J. Skarky, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Dr. Patricia L. Breusing, Kansas City; Barbara J. Bridges, Houston, Texas; Eugene Browning Jr, Huntsville, Texas; and Robert A. Browning, Kansas City. She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Her children are saddened by the fact that Alzheimer’s Disease robbed her of 20 years of enjoyment with this large extended family.

Her memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 19 at Langsford Funeral Chapel in Lee’s Summit with burial in Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery. Visitation will be at Langsford Funeral Home at 9 a.m. preceding the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and sent to the funeral home.

(Arrangements: Langsford Funeral Home, 115 S.W. Third St., Lee’s Summit, Mo. 64063, 816-524-3700.)
