‘Ms. Lee’s Summit,’ Mary Stacy, 92, Lee’s Summit, went to heaven June 9, 2010. Mary was born in Centerview, the daughter of William Myrvin and Jessie May Gowans. She was educated in the Centerview public schools and later attended the Kansas City Business College, earning her certification as a legal secretary.
Mary was always a true icon in the community. She was loved and admired by many. She would often say it was "her privilege" to work and serve her community.
Mary was employed by Missouri Public Service and served as the executive secretary to the president. She was the first employee of the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Corporation and became executive director of the Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, Inc. organization in 1994. Most recently she was employed by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation and the Lee’s Summit Journal from which she retired in 2008.
Over her career, she retired four times and genuinely enjoyed giving her time and talent to others. Her work ethic was second to none, always working positively toward solutions. Mary had a knack for engaging and inspiring others to love and serve their community. She was known for her sense of style and being dressed to the nines.
She was a community leader, a friend to all, and an inspiration to those who age gracefully and actively. Mary was very active in her community and church, Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church. Mary was a member of the Rotary Club, the Lee’s Summit Hospital Board, Executive Women International, BPW and PEO, serving as an officer. She was awarded a lifetime membership of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce in 2003, having served on the Oktoberfest and Visitors Council committees for many years. Mary was also awarded the Lee’s Summit Volunteer of the Year award by the Heartland Community Foundation and also received the Westgate Volunteer of the year award. Mary also cherished her time as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was also honored with a Community Service Award by the Daughters of the American Revolution.Mary was an avid bowler, she loved gardening and enjoyed crocheting, fishing, playing the piano and spending time with her family.
Mary leaves behind a son, Bill Stacy and his wife, Dee, Blue Springs; grandchildren, Tiffany Bernard and her husband, Chris Bernard, David Stacy and his girlfriend, Patty Binkley, and Lance File; and two great-granddaughters, Brittany Trotter and Jessica Christenberry. She also leaves hundreds of friends and colleagues.
Mary will forever be remembered by a commemorative memorial placed in her honor by Mayor Karen Messerli at the park at Second and Douglas streets, aptly titled, "Stacy’s Respite."
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., June 11 and the funeral at 10 a.m., June 12 at United Methodist Church, Lee’s Summit. The Rev. Pat Kelley will be presiding. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. in Centerview. Flowers may be sent to United Methodist Church.
Mary will be missed, yet her spirit will resonate and should be celebrated as such.

Mary was the "First Lady" of Lee's Summit. She had a remarkable energy and drive and was always positive about life and especially Lee's Summit life. Always a well mannered lady, Mary was gracious, and polite but you always got the "striaght skinney" from Mary. I had the extreme pleasure and honor of working with Mary at Downtown Main Street, Inc. for many years and I can say, without a doubt, Mary was one of the most dynamic people I have ever known. Knowing Mary as I have, I feel strongly that she would want all who knew her not to mourn but to celebrate her life!
