Jan. 17, 2012
Rob & Febe Long Personal statement on Robert Long’s shooting from his family: Wife Febe Long, Parents Randy and Sherry Long, Parents-in-law Alan and Laura Woodworth, Sister Shannon (Long) Walls and Brother-in-law Tyler Walls
Raytown, Mo. January 17, 2012 -- Robert Long was shot and killed on Thursday, January 12, 2012. The news media have reported that he was excited and celebrating the news of his upcoming deployment to Afghanistan, but those who knew Rob best recognized that, although excited about serving his country, Rob was troubled from lingering memories of his previous deployment to Iraq.
Rob was a well-loved husband, father and son. But he returned from Iraq after a 6-month deployment in 2007-2008 with increasing bouts of depression. Friends have relayed moments when Rob would try to share his haunting memories from the war, but even the memories were overwhelming and difficult to express.
Rob was a man who loved life and approached everything he undertook with a strong determination to succeed. He was a man of honor who loved others indiscriminately. While serving in Iraq, Rob revealed his character by working extra hours at the military hospital - even after a full day of his normal duties. This experience inspired him to transfer from the U.S. Air Force to the Navy Reserves to become a corpsman (medic) so he could save lives.
Simply put, Rob was an amazing young man who was well-loved by many. At the front of the list are his wife, Febe, and his sweet, three year-old daughter Ava. His selfless and generous spirit, fun sense of humor, unending loyalty to family and friends, and of course, the love he showed for his country, made him an easy man to love.
Robert Long’s genuineness and raw honesty inspired many to live to the fullest of their capacity. A talented musician, he used his musical abilities to bring many people into the presence of the Lord in youth and church services. He will be greatly missed by all.
------------------- Visitation for Robert Long will be held Wednesday, January 18th from 11:00am – 1:00pm at World Revival Church, 9900 View High Drive, Kansas City, Missouri 64134. Funeral will follow at 1:00pm, with internment at the graveside after. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up for Ava Long, Rob’s daughter. Those who would like to can donate at: http://www.roblongmemorial.com/.
The family extends their great appreciation for the love and support that has been shown them in this time of tragedy.
