Robert Hugh Martin

Robert Hugh Martin, long- time resident of Lee’s Summit passed away suddenly April 3, 2017. 

Robert was born August 22, 1934 in Howard County, Missouri to Thomas N. and Edna B. (O’Brian) Martin. He was raised in Carrier Mills, Illinois. Robert attended Southern Illinois University-Carbondale earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1956. 

Following graduation, he joined the United States Air Force where he earned the rank of lieutenant, trained as a pilot and developed a life-long interest in aviation. On separation from the Air Force, Robert settled in Lee’s Summit, married and eventually entered law school. 

He received the law degree from the University of Kansas City (UMKC) in 1965. In his early career, Robert served as Municipal Judge and Assistant Jackson County Prosecutor before joining in the partnership Graham, Paden, Welch, Martin and Albano of Independence, Missouri. 

He served two terms in the Missouri House of Representatives (1969-1972). He was a charter member of the McComas Airport Board and, at the time of his death, was the longest serving member of the Board of Trustees of the Junior College District of Metropolitan Kansas City (MCC) having first been elected in 1978. 

Robert was three time a Paul Harris Fellow in Lee’s Summit Rotary Club. He also held memberships in the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, the United States Federal Bar-State of Missouri, the Missouri Bar Association, the Metropolitan Bar Association, and the Eastern Jackson County Bar Association. 

Robert was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (Lee’s Summit) and was honored to serve as Bishop’s Warden during a period of the church’s growth. 

Robert is survived by his wife Ellen Forrest Martin of the home, his sons, and daughters in law, Chris R. and Riitta Nurmes Martin of Calabasas, California, Coleman O’Brian Martin, MD and Kelli Andressen, MD of Leawood, Kansas. 

Robert was the proud and loving grandfather of Zachary J.C. Martin and Claire Andressen Martin. He also leaves his step-siblings and their spouses, Tim and Roberta Barth of Belleville, Illinois and Joan and Terry Sanders of Marion, Illinois. 

Visitation will be at the Langsford Funeral Home from 4-7p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017. A funeral mass will be offered at St. Paul’s Church (5th and Green Street Lee’s Summit) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8th. 

Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Robert can be honored by donations to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or the Metropolitan Community Foundation.
