Every letter your send or receive from the US Postal Service has the front and back of the envelope electronically scanned and recorded. It is saved indefinitely. Every e-mail you send or received is saved by the US Government. Every phone call you make or receive has the phone numbers, time, and date saved by the US Government. Every web page you visit has the URL, time, and date saved by your internet browser company. They receive millions of requests for these data from the US Government. And they provide the data.
Now, the Lee’s Summit Police is asking our council for funding to add high speed license place cameras on police cars. These cameras record every car that is parked or passed by the police car. If you visit a gun show, church, bar, liquor store, grocery store, or girl/boy friend, the time, date, and location is recorded and saved in a huge government data base. The Missouri Sunshine Statutes require that these data be provided to the public upon request.
I believe that the Lee’s Summit city council should refuse this outrageous request by the Police Department.
