Dear Editor Lee's Summit Tribune

Dear Editor: The City of Lee’s Summit has become aware recently of a number of complaints regarding street parking downtown. The City of Lee’s Summit and Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, Inc. take these complaints seriously and have been working together diligently to create new parking strategies that are both fair and sensitive to individuals shopping, dining, attending events, and doing business downtown. Our goal is to provide a parking environment that makes street parking easily accessible for our downtown visitors and customers.
Immediate Parking Strategies • Banners and temporary directional signage to FREE, long-term, public parking lots will be installed for customers to easily identify off-street parking lots where parking in excess of two hours is allowed. Eleven, free, long-term, public parking lots are available in the eight-block downtown business district. • Parking maps will be distributed to customers reminding them of the locations of free, long-term, public parking lots. Downtown businesses will be asked to help with this effort. Additionally, the map of free parking downtown is available at www.cityofls.net and www.downtownls.org.
Individuals choosing not to park in one of the FREE, long-term, public parking lots are reminded that there is a two hour street parking restriction in the downtown area Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Street parking restrictions do not apply weekdays after 6 p.m., weekends, and holidays.
Future Parking Strategies • Identify additional methods to inform individuals unfamiliar with the City’s street parking restrictions. • Explore parking ticket validation system allowing for a possible one-time ticket dismissal. • Install permanent directional parking signs in the downtown business district in 2010 – the first phase of a Wayfinding Master Plan approved by the Lee’s Summit City Council. We will keep the public informed as these future parking strategies become effective. We encourage and thank everyone for continuing to patronize our locally-owned downtown businesses. Working together we hope to give our downtown visitors a very positive experience that will bring them back again. If you have questions, please contact us.
Sincerely,
Stephen Arbo City Manager, City of Lee’s Summit (816) 969-1013
Jeanine Rann Executive Director, Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, Inc. (816) 246-6598
