Letter to Editor: Kill List Very un-happy R7 district mother of 2!!

January 12, 2013

Dear Editor,
Very un-happy R7 district mother of 2!!

For the past fourteen years the Lee’s Summit R-7 school district has been telling me how important communication is between the parents and the school.

They want us to tell them everything: medical history, personal history, family contacts, the list goes on and on.  Then can someone please tell me why, on December 7th, when there was a “kill list” found by Administration at Lee’s Summit North High school, the parents of the ENTIRE student body were NOT notified?

I can see the parents of the students on the list being notified first, but they weren’t even notified until a week later and I didn’t find out until a local news station posted it on a social media site!

If we are supposed to keep communication open with our children and the school, I feel it should go both ways.

I should NOT have to wait a MONTH to find out something like this has happened at my child’s school (let alone through social media) to be able to talk to them about this.

How can I explain to them that they need to tell adults right away if they suspect something un-safe or inappropriate, if those adults they are supposed to be trusting are hiding things themselves??  I would really like some answers!!
