Letter to the Editor: Veterans Day Parade 2017
November 18, 2017
Dear Mayor Randy Rhoads,
members of the City Council,
Donnie Rodgers, Executive Director of Downtown LS
and Downtown LS Board of Directors
It troubles me to say that the City of Lee’s Summit and Downtown organization should be ashamed for the 2017 Veterans Day Parade. 20 years ago, the annual Veterans Day Parade was a big deal!
The entire city was involved in honoring our generations of Veterans who have proudly served this country and the many that now continue to serve our city.
Sadly, that is no longer the case. While city hall and the Downtown merchants are more than happy to have a Emerald Isle Parade, Downtown Bunny Hop Parade, and Boos Barks & Badges Parade wind their way through our downtown streets, the Veteran Day Parade has been pushed further and further out until this year they finally managed to detour the Veterans, completely bypassing the downtown core so their precious shops would not be inconvenienced.
That is a sad testament to the decline of what was once a common patriotism in small town America.
Emerald Isle, an icon of debauchery, has a higher standing in the hearts of our merchants than the Veterans who made their freedom possible.
I hope our Veterans can count on you next year to restore their parade to the prominence it once held and bring the route back into the heart of downtown where it belongs.
Lee’s Summit, MO
