09-18-09 Cap and Trade, Non-Starter
Dear Editor,
Since when is Congress supposed to be killing jobs and increasing the cost of living?
Many people have heard that Congress is working on a “cap and trade” climate bill, in fact the Senate is now beginning to consider a bill that could be voted before the end of the year. Supporters say this legislation will somehow help solve our country’s energy problems and help our economy.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
The “cap and trade” legislation narrowly approved by the House of Representatives in June, better known as the Waxman-Markey bill, would actually cost Americans millions in dollars in increased energy costs, and millions of dollars in lost revenues due to the increased job loss.
The Waxman-Markey bill would kill jobs and make energy more expensive for the average American family
In Missouri alone, we stand to lose nearly 58,900 jobs by the year 2030. Our energy cost would increase exponentially. By 2015, Missourians can expect to pay 8 percent more for electricity, a cost most families would struggle with.
It is predicted that the gross state product would be reduced by between $638 million and $1.1 billion per year by 2020.
By 2030, Missouri could face a reduction in gross state product to the tune of $9.2 billion.
We as Missourians cannot stand by and let this happen. We need to preserve our jobs and Missouri’s economy.
Rep. Brian Yates Missouri House of Representatives
