Dear Editor: What are the Qualifications for School Board?

My family and I moved to Lee’s Summit in 2001, at a time when our little ones were beginning to take their first steps and later starting their academic careers. Lee’s Summit has been our home since, and as we’re getting ready to send our second one off to college, we plan on being here for a long time to come.  As a candidate in the LSR7 April election, I wanted to drop you a note that perhaps can generate some reflection.  I am one of 10 people willing to invest and devote a tremendous amount of time to help lead LSR7, to help our kids and continue improving our city.  I have met with almost every other candidate, and there’s certainly a lot of passion and eagerness to serve.  It’s worth remembering that not too long ago, we had elections where people ran unopposed. Now, we have a crowded field of people wanting to step up.

Setting The Record Straight

Last April, I received more votes than any contested council candidate in the city. From that moment a group of people opposed to me for their own personal reasons along with a few insiders have been trying to overturn last year’s election by recalling me.

Last November at the polls hundreds of voters were lied to in an effort to get enough signatures to place this recall on the April ballot. Here are the facts.

General Municipal Election Right Around the Corner

The Missouri General Assembly is currently in the middle of its annual legislative spring break, which is always a great opportunity to get caught up and prepare for the second half of session. Since the Legislature is on break, I wanted to use this week’s column to highlight the upcoming General Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.

The News Conference That Didn’t Happen & Feelings vs. Facts

On Monday afternoon, just after two o’clock, the Tribune received an email from Pete Comer announcing that there would be a press conference in less than four hours at the Lotawana Park across from City Hall. He didn’t specify who was going to speak, and when asked, stated it was Thomas Strannigan. I replied to Mr. Comer and said this was a very short time frame, and I was still recovering from open heart surgery. I asked if Thomas was just reading a statement or would Thomas be taking questions from the press. The response:

“Thomas Strannigan will be speaking but as of now will not be taking questions until he gets more information from his lawyer.” – Pete Comer

Dear Editor: Charter Commission

Submitted Letter to the Editor by
Lenny Cacchio,
Lee’s Summit, MO

Although a member of the Charter Commission, I am writing this letter as a concerned private citizen. What follows are opinions and do not necessarily reflect the views of my fellow Commissioners.
It is with some interest that I have read the various articles and opinion pieces in this newspaper regarding the Commission's work. I hope that others besides me have noticed that none of the articles have addressed any specifics on the proposed amendments. Instead the focus has been on alleged corruption and kickbacks related to eight of the twelve commissioners.

Dear Editor: Jacqueline Clark

It's been about 35 years ago, when I met Jacqueline (Jackie McEntire, then) Clark at a high school debate tournament. Her debate partner, Chris Adams, now a teacher/debate coach at Truman and William Chrisman high schools, and Jackie were very good debaters and they beat us, but a friendship was established.
