Letter to the Editor: No New KCI

I’m going to vote “no” on a new KCI airport.

KCI needs to be managed by the KCATA and possibly KC Port Authority. Both have the power to unify the KC region.

The Evidence of Faith’s Substance: The Cure for Racism in America? Ask Lemuel Haynes

Romans 14:12 “Each of us shall give an account of himself before God.”

In his 1792 sermon “The Character and Work of a Spiritual Watchman Described,” Pastor Lemuel Haynes explained to his all-white congregation in Rutland, Vermont, the five traits a pastor must possess to be an effective servant of Jesus Christ. First, he must love Christ and love proclaiming His name to all who would hear. Second, he must understand the spiritual enemies whom he is engaging. Third, he must be patient with everyone to whom he ministers. Fourth, he must be courageous and strong-hearted. And fifth, he must also be alert to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with all who would allow him.

Letter to the Editor: Puerto Rico vs. Texas and Florida

Today President Trump decided to tweet out "We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!"

When Texas was devastated by it's recent Hurricane, he tweeted "TEXAS: We are with you today, we are with you tomorrow, and we will be with you EVERY SINGLE DAY AFTER, to restore, recover, and REBUILD.”

The Evidence of Faith’s Substance: My Conscience & The Bill of Rights - From God, Not Government

1Corinthians 10:29  “Why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience?”

We are living in a time when we have two very opposing views of American society. The secular view holds that the rights of individuals come from government. The Judeo-Christian view holds to the Constitution’s directive that individual rights are “inalienable” – they derive from God – and cannot be taken away by government. This is the view of the Founding Fathers, and is embodied in an individual’s right of conscience to not only freely speak their views but also respect and tolerate opposing views of others.

Congressman Cleaver Releases Statement Regarding the President’s Health Care Executive Order

Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement today regarding President Donald Trump’s signed executive order on health care.

“Instead of working with Congress to determine what’s best for Americans and their health care, the President has decided to force his political agenda on the American people. There is a reason why the GOP effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has failed time and time again. The President wants to blame Democrats but the truth is, the proposed health care changes will hurt millions, regardless of their party affiliation."

Speaking Up About Suicide

The most important thing you can do to stop suicide is to speak up.

A life was lost in Lee’s Summit recently. I cannot speak for this individual. I cannot tell you what drove them to this point. Instead, I will tell you what I’ve learned from my own struggles with suicide ideation and what role you can play in saving someone’s life.

Talk. Speak up. Listen. Learn.

The Evidence of Faith’s Substance: How to Stop the Lie about Police Racism- Tell the Truth

Proverbs 23:23  “Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.”

You’ve probably used the phrase “I just don’t buy it.” It’s a way of saying “I don’t believe it.” Like so many idioms in our English language, it has its roots in the Bible, and especially in our verse for this week. King Solomon, in one of his many practical instructions in the Old Testament book of Proverbs, advises us to be very careful when people are trying to get you to buy in with their position. In America today, it is easier than ever to be confused over what really is the truth. Such is the case with our police men and women.

Suicide Is A Symptom

Steven M Arkin MD
Guest Columnist

As we mourn another young suicide in our community, we take pause to remember all those that have passed before and those that still struggle and live with their mental illnesses. Suicide is a symptom of real disease. People with mental illnesses do not have character flaws.

Their brains are not letting them react or adapt to environmental triggers appropriately. This leads to feelings of inferiority then hopelessness and helplessness and then isolation which is most dangerous. And unfortunately, we as a society do not know how to react and interact appropriately to those with mental illness.

We must learn together, to first understand these illnesses but more importantly how to talk to people about theirs. We need to allow the difficult conversations to take place, to encourage them and provide support by knowing your limitations and have proper resources on hand.

Statement from Lieutenant Governor Mike Parson on Las Vegas

Few words can express the sadness I feel for all those affected by the mass shooting in Las Vegas early this morning, now the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Those affected were not criminals or bad people, but ordinary Americans gathering to enjoy a country music festival.
