Request From Doug

June 23, 2012

I’m encouraging everyone in the newly formed District 31 (former District 55) to re-elect State Representative Sheila Solon in the upcoming primary on August 7th.

I recently had the pleasure of serving as her intern this past Legislative Session and spent 40+ hours each week working closely with Solon in her office. As her recent intern as well as a current constituent of hers, I feel as though I have a very good grasp of how our Representative is representing our district.

Representative Solon is the definition of what a public servant should be and actually listens to those that she represents. From the beginning I continued to gain a greater appreciation for the hard work she does for her district. There were countless times when she would come in earlier than all of the office staff to reply to constituent emails and then stay later than the office staff to research bills being heard in her committees and even write up notes about bills she wished to support or defeat. She took the trust of the people very seriously and put in long hours to serve those in her district.

Despite what her opponents would like to paint her as, let me assure you that Representative Solon has represented us exceptionally well. She is one of a handful of politicians in Missouri’s Legislature that does not accept a single lobbyist or special interest gift, meal, sporting event ticket, etc. Anyone that says she panders to special interests or supports legislation to benefit her campaign contributors; is either being disingenuous or simply doesn’t know Sheila Solon very well. The first thing she does when looking at a piece of legislation is to decide whether it would help or hurt the folks in her district. She then analyzes the costs, overall effects, etc.

Unfortunately those that oppose her, especially in Blue Springs’ City Hall, confuse her unwavering dedication to her district for being stubborn and hard to get along with. I will admit that she’s not a “rank and file” type of politician by any means and if you were to ask her fellow colleagues in the Missouri House they would agree. She sacrifices political gain and puts her neck on the line even when her own party leadership is against her. She cannot be bought or swayed because she knows she is voting in the best interest of her district.

She truly cares about bettering the lives of those in Blue Springs and I can honestly say that she is one of the most dedicated and focused lawmakers in Jefferson City. If you would like someone to be your voice in the Missouri Legislature and not the voice of Blue Springs’ City Council, support Sheila Solon. She has the knowledge, the experience, and the drive to stand up for the residents in her district and would be an exceptional Representative for the folks in District 31.
