Approximately 300 elementary-age students enrolled in the Lee's Summit R-7 School District Kids Country program recently participated in a team-building and fitness activity known as I-Games.
Short for intramural games, I-Games brought students from all elementary schools together for activities on July 22 at Summit Lakes Middle School. Kids Country before- and after-school child care program is offered at all 18 R-7 elementary schools throughout the school year. During the summer months, students from all R-7 school Kids Country programs attend one of six summer locations for structured activities, lessons and field trips. I-Games also provides an activity that brings students from different schools throughout the R-7 School District together to help them become acquainted.
I-Games included baseball, kickball, dodge ball and track and field. Students also had the opportunity to become part of the pep club or help run a concession stand. As part of I-Games, events focused on "how students played the game" as opposed to winning and losing. During the event, Kids Country staff recognized students for good sportsmanship, athletic ability, enthusiasm and for operating the cleanest concession stand.
Through Kids Country "camp cash," students had the opportunity to earn "cash" they could spend in the I-Games concession stand. Kids Country staff members seeing a student exhibiting positive character traits rewarded these students with the concession stand "camp cash" to spend on game day.
During the sports section of I-Games, students learned how to warm-up and practiced drills and scrimmaging. During the concession unit, students focused on supply and demand, advertising sales, preparation and clean-up. The I-Games pep club made signs, practiced cheers and created instruments.
