Standing Among the Lily Pads~Boy Scout Troop 220, Crew#2
August 6, 2011
Boy Scout Troop 220 Crew # 2 Northern Tier National High Adventure Crew #2 #072211G Alex Holt, Jonathan Boyson, Brad Lane, Brandon Lane, Colt Short, Jake Jacobson, Sean Ahern, Austin Ahern July 22 thru July 31, 2011 Total of 135 miles, 32 portages, over 8.5 miles of hiking with 60 pounds canoe weighing 70 pounds over their heads.
By Alexander T. Holt Northern Tier Crew #2 As the paddles hit the Minnesota waters, the two crews from Troop 220, from the Lee’s Summit Christian Church headed two different directions to find their own adventure at the Charles L. Sommers Boy Scout’s Northern Tier Base. I thought to myself, “What have you gotten yourself into?”
The air smelled of pine and cedar. The forest looked like I fell into the book of “Hatchet.” Few people passed by us and the farther we paddled the less I saw of humans.
Whatever I need I carried on my back and the back of my crew. We ate from the fish that was caught from the cool crisp waters and the blueberries and raspberries that we would pick on the bushes once we portaged to camp. My crew would hit the waterways just in time to see the sunrise. In the distance we would hear the calling of the loons and the elk. Every day above us a bald eagle would take to the air in its natural habitat, for us to see.
With each portage, I wondered if we would make it because of the head winds coming at us. We kept padding. Finding ourselves in the historical path of the Fur Traders of the past, we were wondering what was at the next portage, and when we were going to find a place to camp for the night. We were determined to learn as much as we could and make the most of the adventure before us.
As my body ached from sore muscles and a sunburn, the crew and I found we had accomplished 137 miles. My crew completed 32 portages, over 8.5 miles of hiking with 60 pounds on our backs and a canoe weighing 70 pounds over our heads.
We made it back to where life left us: with a new quest under our sash, and the capability to accomplish anything we set out to do. We came back to the hassles of reality with the memories of an adventure that we concurred together as a team.
