Troop 262 Camps at Jacobs Cave
August 27, 2011
Boy Scout Troop 262 from Lees Summit, Missouri held its August campout at Jacobs Cave near Gravois Mill, Missouri on Aug. 13 to 14. The event started like most campouts. They loaded up tents, sleeping bags, etc into the Troop trailer and leaders cars, drove to the campground, and set up camp on Friday evening. After enjoying a hearty dutch oven breakfast Saturday morning, they took a guided tour of Jacobs Cave and saw many beautiful and interesting cave formations that are still actively forming. But the best part happened after lunch when they returned to the cave and were allowed to explore the undeveloped portion of the cave called “The Maze.” After twisting, crawling and wiggling thru various tight passages and muddy holes they would emerge back at the start only to go back into another access point and explore some more. Each time they came out they began to look less like the clean Scouts they started as and more like swamp creatures coated from head to toe in mud. The only evidence of their true identity was their toothy smiles that gleamed thru the mud. In the end, they were sprayed down and returned to their old outside appearances but inside they will never be the same again. The memories of their fun in the mud as a Boy Scout will stay will them for a very long time.
