A highlight every year for volleyball teams in the Lee’s Summit school district is the annual Dig for the Cure game. This year Lee’s Summit Tigers played host to the event on Monday, Oct. 18. The Tigers met rival Lee’s Summit North Broncos as the two teams tipped off the final week of the 2021 regular season.
In addition to three volleyball matches there was a silent auction and event T-shirts were sold to help raise funds for the Stephanie Vest Foundation. All event attendees were welcome to pick up a sign and write a person’s name on it to show support of a loved one impacted by cancer. Every player from LS North and LSHS had a card to represent someone they were playing for on that night. Lee’s Summit High School Athletic Director Tracy Bertoncin said, “The Tiger spirit and community presence was great in the fieldhouse on Monday evening.”
Monday night events began a busy week for both the Broncos and Tigers who head into post-season play this weekend. The Class 5, District 13 tournament will take place at Lee’s Summit West on Oct. 21, 23 and the final match on the 25th. The host LS West Titans are the second seed, LS North is third and Lee’s Summit enters as the fourth seed. The Titans and Broncos will meet at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 for the right to advance to the final on Monday, Oct. 25. For Lee’s Summit, they open up against Raytown for the right to play top seed St. Teresa’s in the semi-finals.
