For some Missourians, September marks one of the most wonderful times of the year, and that is the start of the archery deer season. For many, archery deer hunting is a time to get quality time outdoors, and hopefully, a chance to harvest a deer.

For some residents of Jackson County, the opportunity to archery hunt is much more obtainable than getting a chance during the firearms season. The season begins on Sep. 15, 2024, and lasts until Jan. 15, 2025, with a break from November 15 through 27 for the firearms portion.

To legally hunt using archery methods all hunters must first purchase their archery deer permits at a local vendor, Missouri Department of Conservation office, or at mdc.mo.gov. Using your archer’s hunting permit, a hunter may take two deer of either sex, with only one being antlered, before the firearms deer season. If the hunter does not harvest an antlered deer during the firearms portion, they may then harvest another antlered deer using archery methods after the firearms season. Hunters may also take any number of antlerless deer during the archery season, so long as they possess a valid antlerless permit. An important change to this year’s archery season is that you may no longer harvest turkey using archery permits, but instead must use a fall turkey permit.
