On Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 5:42 a.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 406 NE Keystone Drive. The neighbor heard a loud noise and looked out the window and saw heavy smoke coming from the neighbor’s house and could hear the smoke alarms sounding. The caller did not know if the house was occupied.
When the fire department arrived on scene heavy smoke was visible from a single-story, single family residence. There were no occupants outside. A neighbor advised they were able to reach the occupant by phone and they were coming to the house.
Fire crews found the attic heavily involved in fire. Crews initially entered the structure to fight the fire and were backed out for a brief exterior attack after the fire burned through the roof. After the fire was knocked down, crews went back inside for final extinguishment. The fire was under control by 6:23 a.m.
The fire heavily damaged the attic and a portion of the first floor.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
