Charles E. Greenway, 91, of Warrensburg, MO, died after a long battle with dementia at the Missouri Veterans Home-Warrensburg. He was born June 1, 1933, in Cardwell, Missouri, the son of Warren and Mildred Greenway.
Charlie graduated high school at 15 in rural Paragould, Arkansas and worked in the cotton fields until enlisting in the U.S. Army at 18. He was stationed in Austria. After serving in the Army, Charlie moved to Kansas City, Missouri and worked at First National Bank for over 35 years. He started in the “Coin Room”, attended college while working full time to achieve a degree in business, and rose the ranks to Senior Vice President, running the Fed Funds Department and trading Bonds for the Bank. It was also at the bank that he met his future wife, Jane (Jennie) Salvaggio.
Charlie, his wife, and their 3 children lived several years in Independence, Missouri, until moving south to the rural residential life in Greenwood, Missouri. There, he returned with family in-tow, to the acreage living of his childhood, full of horses, cattle, ponds, and big vegetable gardens. Charlie was an avid, life-long golfer, a capable and consistent fisherman of bass and crappie, and a long time KC Chief’s season ticket holder. Outside of recreation, Charlie served on several business boards and was an involved, elected alderman, working with various Mayors in Greenwood. Later in life, Charlie and Jennie moved to Lee’s Summit and were highly involved with their children and grandchildren. One notable, great event for Charlie was a full-family trip to Maui, Hawaii, where he got to “touch all his favorite bases” by being surrounded by his wife, kids, their spouse, and grandkids, all the while playing golf and fishing.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was pre-deceased by his wife Jennie of 59 years, and great-grandson Ben Knabe. Surviving is his sister Wava, 3 children, Mark, Jeff (Sue) and Joi, all of Lee’s Summit, 3 granddaughters, Markie Campfield (Grant), and Charlie Jean Greenway, both of Dallas, Texas, Jackie Knabe Reno (Travis), from Hermitage, MO, a grandson, Jeff Burkhart (Amy), from Burlington, IA, a great granddaughter Abby, from Kirksville, MO, a great grandson, Theodore Charles (Teddy) of Dalla, Sage and Kale, Burlington, IA, and several other nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 9, 2024, at Langsford Funeral Home in Lee’s Summit, MO. Those who wish to remember Charlie in a special way, or in lieu of flowers, may make gifts in his memory to; Loving Arms Adult Daycare, 13856 Wyandotte St, Kansas City, Mo 64145, or the Missouri Veteran Home-Warrensburg, 1300 Veterans Road, Warrensburg, MO 64093, both of which provided tremendous service, care, and love to Charlie.
