Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, Raytown residents will be able to conveniently and properly dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) free of charge. The City of Raytown joined the regional HHW program through the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Solid Waste Management District (SWMD).

“Staff have been working for many years on how to get this implemented – we recognized that this is a valuable service for our residents,” said Damon Hodges, City Administrator for the City of Raytown. “We are pleased that we are now able to offer this as a free service to all of our residents.”

Raytown residents may take their HHW products to one of two permanent collection sites year-round or drop off during any of the mobile collections held throughout the year. Proof of residency is required. Permanent collection facilities are located at 4707 Deramus, near the East Bottoms and at 2101 SE Hamblen Road in Lee’s Summit.

According to Nadja Karpilow, Environmental Planner with the MARC SWMD, the 2024 HHW mobile collection schedule will be available in March 2024. In 2023, there were 10 mobile collections events from April to October.

Raytown joins the regional program, becoming one of nearly 40 participating communities in the metro area. Acceptable items include: automotive products, antifreeze, batteries, CFL bulbs, fertilizers, flammables, fuels, hazardous cleaners and liquids, household cleaners, lawn and garden products, paint, pesticides, photographic chemicals, pool chemicals, solvents, thinners and used oil.
