The recently formed John Knox Village resident-led Civil War Round Table is opening its membership to a limited number of community residents.
When JKV resident Charlie Peoples realized that Lee’s Summit and the surrounding area had no round table in the metropolitan area, he established a group at John Knox Village earlier this year. The round table offers monthly programs that provide insight into both military and civilian aspects of the Civil War in Missouri, especially along the MO-KS border.
Presenters include well-known historians and living historians. This year’s presentations and discussions included the Second Battle of Independence, living on the fence in Kansas, the role of women and the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. The December program will discuss Refugees of the Civil War.
In 2025, the group looks forward to programs including a visit with a Robert E. Lee impersonator, the Buffalo Soldiers, the Missouri Burnt District, the leadership of General Grant and the Impacts of the Civil War.
The round table meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm in the Meadows Community Room, 1800 NW O’Brien Rd. December’s meeting will be a week early on December 10. Membership is individual, $25 and family, $35.
The group is inviting a limited number of community residents to join the JKV members who are enriching their lives with history.
