Clifford Donald Mathis, born May 20th, 1917, passed away peacefully the morning of January 4th, 2021 at Summit View Assisted Living in Kansas City, MO.
He was 103 years old. Born in Kansas City, MO, he attended East High School.
He was a proud WWII veteran, and earned two Bronze Stars while serving. After serving in WWII, he and his wife owned a Western Auto store in Kansas City, which was blown away in the Ruskin Heights tornado of 1957. Then, he worked at Valentine Truck Leasing, later Rollins where he retired as an office manager.
In retirement, he continued to give back to the community by volunteering at Prairie View Elementary, where he read to students. He also shared his war experiences on Veteran’s Day at Richardson Elementary. A devout Christian, he was a member at First Baptist Church of Raytown, where he attended services regularly. Always a Kansas City man at heart, Cliff was a dedicated Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan, and enjoyed local Barbecue as well.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Mathis, his sweetheart of 74 years; daughter Denise Mathis; grandson Kory Mathis and his wife Hannah; and great-granddaughter Hazel Mathis.
His graveside service will be held Friday, January 8th at 2:00 pm at Mt Moriah Memorial Home. Memorial donations can be made to VFW Post 5789, 329 SE Douglas St, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063, and flowers can be sent to Mt. Moriah Newcomer and Freeman Memorial Home, 10507 Holmes Rd, Kansas City, MO 64131
