Dee was born on January 10, 1934, in Kansas City, Kansas to Wallace B. Proffitt, Sr. and Josephine Koenig Proffitt. She graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1951 and in September of that year was hired by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers/Blacksmith’s AFL-CIO office as an audit clerk and typist. She later advanced to assistant office manager of her department and completed 24 years of service there. In November of 1975, she and her husband, Bob, moved to Independence, Missouri. She had been in volunteer services at the Medical Center of Independence, a Bishop Ward’s Alumni Association member, and an active St. Mark’s Catholic Church member for over 40 years.
Dee enjoyed her flower garden in Independence, especially the roses, which she loved growing and sharing with friends and neighbors. Dee cherished the friendships she made over the years, both at work and during the 31 years she and Bob spent in Independence. In 2006, they moved to Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and began another phase of their retirement, meeting new people, traveling, and celebrating their 50th anniversary on April 19, 2008.
Dee enjoyed the celebration of life with family and friends and will be missed by those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her father on January 9, 1986, her mother on August 31, 2003, her brother, Wallace B. Proffitt Jr., on March 9, 2003, and her nephew, Wallace L. Proffitt. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert L. Nick, of the home, two nephews, Michael D. Proffitt of Overland Park, Kansas, and Dennis S. Proffitt of Kansas City, Kansas, as well as their extended family.
