Former NFL player and coach Sherman Smith visited Lee’s Summit on Monday, Sept. 19 to speak at an event hosted by Abundant Life Church. The topic for Smith was not about winning the Super Bowl or pro football at all but the importance of fatherhood. The main topic of the evening was a Christian documentary called “Show Me the Father.”
The 2021 documentary presents five fatherhood related stories with commentary from Tony Evans. Sherman Smith is well known for being a long-time NFL running backs coach, a role he served with the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 48 in 2014. For older NFL fans Smith is a familiar name for his nine-year NFL playing career from 1976-84. Smith’s first eight seasons was spent with the Seattle Seahawks when the team was a member of the AFC West Division. This meant two meetings a year against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Smith who spoke about the value and importance of fatherhood is also a proud father of another Super Bowl Champion. Smith’s son, Deland McCullough, was a running backs coach with the Chiefs when they won Super Bowl 54 in February 2020. McCullough left a year later for Indiana University and now serves the same role at Notre Dame.
Derek Elliott a care pastor at Abundant Life Church and Rod Handley, president of Character that Counts was on hand to host Smith and introduce him to NFL fans of all ages.
