A Greenwood man has been charged in the assault of his infant daughter, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Jonathon Zicarelli, dob 4/25/1990, faces one count of the A Felony Domestic Assault in the 1st Degree.*
According to court records, Defendant entered the Greenwood Police Headquarters at 10:11 on the morning of December 17, 2018. The defendant appeared emotionally removed as he made contact with Corporal T. Calhoun and stated he had just killed his child. Defendant stated he drowned the infant in a pond by the soccer fields on Doc Henry Road.
Corporal Calhoun and Chief G. Hallgrimson responded to the pond’s location to find the infant in an icy pond, floating face up. Corporal Calhoun entered the water, retrieved the child and requested EMS. The child had mud in her eyes, grass and water in her mouth and was barely moving.
During an interview with Jackson County Sheriff Deputies, Defendant stated he planned to kill his baby for over 24 hours after having what he described as “bad thoughts.” Defendant confessed he drove to the pond, parked his car, walked down to the pond three separate times trying to determine if he could kill the child before placing the baby in the water and watching the child sink prior to leaving. Defendant stated he took these actions because he was trying to make it easier on his wife and he was stressed out due to the holiday and trying to provide for the family.
At the time of admission, the child’s body temperature registered at 87.9 degrees Fahrenheit. The child’s last known medical condition was stable but still in the Emergency Room receiving ongoing medical treatment for severe hypothermia.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $500,000 cash.
*Charges are only accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or has pleaded.
