The City of Lee’s Summit held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Apr. 18 to mark the start of a $16.8 million project to construct a new hangar at the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport.
The project includes infrastructure development and a 50,000 square foot state-of-the-art hangar with 30,000 square feet dedicated to corporate aircraft storage. The design incorporates a lounge, conference room and second-floor observation deck for viewing aircraft arrivals and departures. Hangar 2 will also be the home to the LSR-7 School District’s Aerospace Academy, offering students valuable hands-on industry experience. Completion of the project is slated for late summer 2025.
“This expansion represents a significant investment in the future of aviation at our airport and positions us to meet the growing demand of corporate and business travelers,” said Joel Arrington, airport manager. “With first-class amenities for passengers and crews and ample space for various aircraft, Hangar 2 underscores our commitment to excellence in serving our customers while providing the highest standards of safety, efficiency and reliability.”
The development of Hangar 2 is a key component of the Airport Master Plan which includes the implementation of infrastructure to provide sufficient capacity and service levels to meet future aviation demand. The project is funded by both general obligation bonds approved by voters in April 2023 and the Transportation Sales Tax. Funding for the Aerospace Academy is being provided by the Lee’s Summit School District.
