As the year 2022 comes to a close the winter sports season heated up with events during the holiday season. One of the many events being held between Christmas and the New Year’s holiday is the 43rd Annual William Jewell High School Holiday Classic. Playing in the Holley Division was the Lee’s Summit Tigers Boys basketball team. Opening round action on Tuesday, Dec. 27 saw the Tigers lose a tough one to Liberty North 45-41. The Tigers returned to the court the next day for a noon game against the Center Yellowjackets. The Tigers won 56-49 to advance to the tourney’s fifth place game where they were slated to play the Raytown Blue Jays.
The St. Michael’s boys and girls basketball teams were busy playing in separate events. The boys team fresh off from winning the first annual Butler Invitational headed north this week to St. Joseph, MO. The Guardians played in the Bishop LeBlond Holiday Tournament. A first round game saw the Guardians beat Lawsone 52-42. A semifinal game against host Bishop LeBlond was up next with a final night of play set for Dec. 29. The SMA Girls basketball team played Lafayette County as part of the 12 Courts of Christmas event held at Hy-Vee Arena. The Guardians scored a victory over the Huskers and in the process saw Victoria Swingle score her 1,000th career point.
Right after the New Year begins the LS North Fieldhouse will be a busy place. First up on Monday, Jan. 2 the LS North Broncos girls basketball team ends their holiday break by hosting the Staley Falcons. The next night the Broncos boys basketball team takes the floor to end a two week break with a game against Staley. Then on Wednesday, Jan. 4 it’s the Broncos wrestling team’s turn to end their holiday break with a meet against Park Hill South.
