Two Metropolitan Community College presidents are honored to be speaking at separate events on Saturday, Jan. 14 in honor of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MCC-Business & Technology President Jackie Gill, Ed.D., will be part of a celebration hosted by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas. Gill is the keynote speaker for the

SCLC’s Scholarship Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 14.

• The event will be at 9 a.m. at the College Basketball Experience at the Sprint Center, 1401 Grand Blvd. in Kansas City. At the invitation-only event, Gill will share her journey with high school and college scholarship recipients and their families.

• During the breakfast, SCLC will award 16 high school seniors with scholarships and 10 collegiate scholars with continuing scholarships. The Black Achievers Society will also award 10 scholarships to local high school seniors.

Kirk Nooks, Ed.D., president of MCC-Longview in Lee’s Summit, will be the guest speaker at a Martin Luther King musical tribute Saturday, Jan. 14.

• The 13th annual event, sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Celebration Commission of Missouri, will be at 6:30 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 5540 Wayne Ave. in Kansas City. Admission is free and the public is invited.

• The theme of the musical tribute is “A Right Delayed Is a Right Denied: Championing for Justice for All.” Featured acts will include vocal ensemble Book of Gaia (Pamela Baskin-Watson, Nedra

Dixon and Angela Hagenbach), the Max Groove Trio and the Paseo Academy Chamber Choir.

MCC honors MLK day collegewide with a Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 16. At an employee only luncheon Jan. 20, Chancellor Mark James will present a service-minded early college student with the College’s MLK scholarship.
