Filing Open from May 7 To May 14, 2018

Jackson County Sheriff LogoDue to the vacancy in the office of Jackson County Sheriff, the Clerk of the County Legislature will open candidate filing for a five-day period beginning May 7, 2018, for the filing of this office only. The successful candidate will be elected to serve out the unexpired term for the office of Sheriff.

Persons wishing to file a declaration of candidacy for nomination to the office of Sheriff at the August 7, 2018 primary may do so beginning at May 7, 2018, at the Jackson County Courthouse, 415 E. 12th Street, 2nd Floor, Kansas City, Missouri. Please note that Jackson County offices will be closed on May 8, 2018 in observance of Harry S. Truman’s birthday.

Pursuant to the Jackson County Charter, the Sheriff shall take office on January 1 following his or her election. The Sheriff shall be a qualified voter and shall have been domiciled in the county for at least three years before assuming the office. The Sheriff is further required to have met, prior to filing for office, the training qualification required by state law of police officers serving in first-class charter counties. No person shall be eligible for the office of Sheriff who has been convicted of a felony.

The County Clerk’s Office will open at 8 a.m. to accept declarations. To expedite this process, each filer should have a current voter I.D. card needed to complete the declaration form. Filers should have the Department of Revenue (DOR) Form 5120, Candidate’s Affidavit of Tax Payments. Filing will close at 5 p.m. on May 14, 2018.
