The Lee’s Summit City Council unanimously forwarded an ordinance for a second reading at its May 17, 2018 meeting approving a $1 million contract with Vance Brothers for the annual surface seal program to treat 52 lane miles of city-owned streets. Bob Hartnett, deputy director of Public Works said Vance Brothers was the only company that bid on the project.

LS Mayor Bill Baird presided over the meeting with Mayor Pro Tem Beto Lopez and Councilmembers Rob Binney, Trish Carlyle, Fred DeMoro, Phyllis Edson, Craig Faith and Bob Johnson. Hartnett said, “There are other seal coat contractors outside of the metro area but our work probably isn’t big enough for them to come and we believe this is at a fair price.” Mayor Baird said, “This was a product that’s far superior to previous products we’ve used.”

In other business the council moved forward for a second reading an ordinance awarding a contract of $2.7 million to St. Joseph, MO-based Ideker, Inc. for “milling and overlay” of city streets. “Milling” is removal of the asphalt and “overlay” is laying the new asphalt. The “mill and overlay” project will restore 31.3 lane miles. The City received three bids for the project and Ideker was the lowest bidder.

The council also moved forward an ordinance to second reading that would authorize a funding agreement between the City of Lee’s Summit and Summit Orchard Partners LLC for the proposed Summit Orchards Community Improvement District.
