Have you decided this is the year to enter the Lee’s Summit Beautification Commission’s annual Landscape Contest?

It’s time to consider which category you will enter—front yard, back yard, patio/deck/containers, water gardens, creative garden, before-and-after, and native plants/butterfly garden. If you plan to add or improve an area of your landscape for the before-and-after category, take a “before” picture to submit it with your application. Perhaps it is an ugly corner, an area under the deck, or just a plot that needs renovation.

Native/butterfly gardens are a new emphasis in response to the dangerous drop in butterfly populations that threatens pollination of certain food plants. Lee’s Summit is a Monarch Pledge city, and encourages homeowners to join the city’s efforts to plant the native plants that attract butterflies.

Some people are intimidated by the word “landscape.” What this contest celebrates is a love of plants and the beautiful use of them. Whether you do it yourself or hire someone else, the issue is whether the property has been beautified.

Winners will receive an attractive yard sign, a photo of their entry, gift certificate to a local business, and a City Hall reception.

Don’t be shy or modest about your efforts. Each year as we judge the entries we notice other properties that could have been winners—if only they had been entered.

Contest entries are due by June 8th and judging will occur June 30-July 1. Entry forms are available at City Hall (Parks and Recreation Department) and information is available at (816)969-1515 or online at www.lsparks.net. You may scan and email entries to LSBeautification@gmail.com. It’s a very simple process.  Enter here > Show us your landscape!
