The League of Women Voters of Kansas City (LWV) will host a candidate forum for Missouri Senate District 8 residents on Thursday, July 12, at John Knox Village, 518 N.W. Murray Road, Lee’s Summit, in the Courtyard Community Center.

The three candidates vying for the position and who have agreed to participate are Republicans Mike Cierpiot and Leonard Jones Hughes IV and Democrat Hillary Shields. The forum will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A nonpartisan organization, the League of Women Voters organizes candidate forums to help voters make informed choices.

Senate District 8 encompasses an area east of Kansas City that includes the larger communities of Blue Springs, Independence, Grain Valley, Greenwood, Lake Lotawana, Lee’s Summit, Lone Jack and Oak Grove.

The Kansas City League of Women Voters – Kansas City/Jackson/Clay/Platte Counties was formed in 1920 when women got the vote. The organization has an active voter registration outreach program; studies issues, comes to consensus and once it has a position, lobbies at the local, state and national levels, to effect change. The nonpartisan organization, open to men and women, does not support candidates.
