The City of Lee’s Summit hosted a blood drive on Monday, July 23 with the Community Blood Center. The Community Blood Center is dealing with an emergency blood shortage right now and is in need of donations.

Nearly 100 people came out to help tackle a growing shortage in the metro.

With family vacations and kids being out of school, donations tend to fall in the summer months.

The Center stated, “We’ve run through the months of April, May and June through the July 4th holiday, we’re running about 1,500 units short of collections. So at that point, we want to have around a five day supply of blood at all times. At times we’re running between a one and two day supply for certain types of blood.”

The Community Blood Center supplies blood to roughly 85 percent of hospitals in the Kansas City area.

The Lee’s Summit Chamber, Economic Development Council, and Downtown Main Street also partnered on the event.

As an added bonus, all donors received a free pair of Royals tickets.
